About the Role
We are establishing a dedicated Automation & Orchestration function within Kinetic ITs national capability, to accelerate innovation, consistency, and operational excellence across our managed services portfolio. This function will serve as a Centre of Enablement, supporting our dedicated customer account teams by providing the platforms, standards, tools, and guidance they need to design and implement automation in their own environments.
As the Technical Lead – Automation & Orchestration, your primary focus is not to build every automation yourself, but to enable, inspire, and empower engineers across customer-based teams to confidently deliver and scale automation in their day-to-day service delivery. You'll help shape the standards, curate toolsets, and provide reusable assets and frameworks that allow our delivery teams to drive efficiency, reduce manual effort, and improve service quality.
Key Responsibilities
Enablement & Thought Leadership
• Champion a self-service automation model by equipping engineers in account teams with the tools, training, and templates needed to build and manage their own automation solutions.
• Act as a trusted advisor and technical mentor, helping teams assess automation opportunities and guiding them in best practice design and implementation.
• Foster a community of practice / Centre of Enablement across delivery teams to share automation ideas, use cases, successes, and lessons learned.
Platform Stewardship & Technical Strategy
• Define and maintain the technical strategy for Automation & Orchestration, ensuring it aligns with business objectives, customer needs, and security policies.
• Evaluate and select platforms and tools (e.g., Rundeck, Swimlane, Ansible, Azure Runbooks) that support scalable and secure automation.
• Develop reusable automation frameworks, integrations, and governance models that can be leveraged by all teams.
Governance, Standards & Continuous Improvement
• Establish robust governance, including version control, access controls, and auditability of automation assets.
• Define and promote technical standards, development patterns, and quality assurance practices for automation across accounts.
• Track automation adoption, usage, and impact (e.g., manual hours saved, incidents auto-resolved) and use data to continuously evolve the automation approach.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
• Work closely with engineers, service leads, and technical architects in customer-based teams to identify high-impact automation opportunities.
• Lead enablement initiatives including training sessions, documentation libraries, code repositories, and internal showcases.
• Build strong relationships across National Services, account delivery teams, and customer stakeholders to advocate for automation.
Innovation & Future Focus
• Stay abreast of developments in orchestration, AIOps, and AI/ML-driven automation, and assess their applicability within our services.
• Promote a "shift-left" mindset, encouraging proactive, automated approaches to common operational challenges.
• Lead pilot initiatives to explore emerging automation techniques, bringing new capabilities into our enablement toolkit.
Skills required for success:
• Proven experience enabling or leading automation capabilities in a complex, multi-customer IT services environment.
• Strong expertise with tools such as Rundeck, Swimlane, Ansible, PowerShell, Azure Runbooks, or equivalent.
• Experience integrating automation with ITSM (e.g., ServiceNow) and monitoring platforms (e.g., Zabbix, LogicMonitor, SolarWinds).
• Proficiency in scripting and coding (Python, PowerShell, Bash) and API-based integrations.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) and cloud-native automation tools.
• Solid grasp of ITIL and how automation can uplift service management and compliance.
• Excellent collaboration and coaching skills, with a passion for uplifting capability in others.
• Strategic mindset with strong problem-solving abilities and a bias for action.
